A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site last month and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that users put the odds of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other individuals also made large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation put forward on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to politics.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Insider trading is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
