Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this charming family go about their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

ā€œThere's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,ā€ noted Cappa. ā€œIt feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.ā€

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
