"How often on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate others to make music."

Grammy Recognition

The band are speaking from home, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The project was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The words follow endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they want to be.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That developed toughness called for a fresh approach – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The trio's candor fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Legacy

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
