This is Parker’s 40th fight and, apart from three losses, he has been dropped multiple times by various fighters. He invariably recovers but Wardley possesses more power than any opponent he's encountered – with the exception of Wilder who looked a shell of a devastating finisher when Parker achieved a clear unanimous decision in late 2023.

Wardley, a former white-collar slugger, who only took up boxing when he was 20, had no amateur boxing history and has perpetually battled doubts about his comparatively limited skills. But he is equally near to a opportunity for the championship.

“This is the most important contest, at the moment, in the heavyweight category. Both these fighters have accepted the challenge when neither of them needed to make this fight. Joe Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have formally instructed Usyk to fight him, but the Ukrainian was hurt. Joseph is eager to compete regardless.

“Wardley is similarly well-placed and he merely needed to be patient for his time. He said ‘I refuse.’ He wanted to fight – and with Parker because it offers him an opportunity to jump the queue.”

Parker’s Perspective

Parker, who turns 34 in January, said: “This is do or die. I am not focused on a loss. I respect my opponent and what he has done and the way he's trained for this fight. But I am on a higher plane and I am planning to demonstrate it on fight night.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the two of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my career and the biggest fight of my life. But every time I step up I elevate my performance. Saturday will be no different. The divide between Parker's status and my perceived standing has been a common theme in my boxing life.

“He has vast experience for a considerable period, with a lot of fights on his ledger. In no way is he an aged fighter but he has been in the game for a while and had several tough bouts. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a far greater number of those fights than I have.”

But the general belief is that Parker should prove too experienced, and too skilled, for his opponent. He is favored to secure a hard-fought contest with the confidence that he is next in line for a title shot against Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a clear gap.
