Per insights from a former senior officer from the UK's largest police force, police departments are increasingly pressured to publicly share the ethnic backgrounds of individuals under investigation in response to a surge in far-right speculation on social media platforms.

Recent Incident: Knife Attack on Train in Cambridgeshire

On Sunday morning, UK rail authorities reported the arrest of two individuals following a multiple knife attacks aboard a train in Cambridgeshire. An individual, a British citizen of black heritage aged 32, and another, a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, were taken into custody. Later, the older suspect was released with no charges, and authorities stated he was not involved in the attack.

New Guidance to Combat Misinformation

This past summer, new guidelines were rolled out to address the dissemination of false narratives on digital platforms, which had escalated after the tragic murder of three schoolgirls in a English town last summer.

However, advocates warned that this approach could lead to an overemphasis on the racial background of those accused and fuel further rightwing conspiracy theories when information are not shared with the public.

Insights from a Former Officer

A former chief superintendent, who worked in the UK's largest police force, labeled the requirement for law enforcement to disclose the ethnicity of individuals in cases involving people of colour as an "unforeseen outcome".

“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he stated.

He expressed understanding for his ex-peers in the police, explaining that they are “in a no-win situation”. “Pressure mounts due to rampant far-right speculation on social media following significant events, focusing on suspect backgrounds.”

Response from Officials

Ben Obese-Jecty, whose district includes Huntingdon, described it “unfortunate” but essential for authorities to quickly disclose the ethnicities of those arrested.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he remarked, adding that social media are used to push agendas, making it critical for law enforcement to provide facts to address rumors.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Before the police announcement, right-leaning politicians had called for a quicker action. For instance, Chris Philp pushed for prompt sharing of suspect information, while the Reform UK leader stated on X that the people needed to know “without delay”.

Additionally, far-right social media accounts sought to manipulate the event. One account named “British Patriot”—with nearly 5,000 followers—shared an unsubstantiated claim that a knife-wielding man had been shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

Persistent Doubts

Despite police clarified that the arrested individuals were UK citizens, certain figures continued to insinuate that details was being withheld. A former Reform UK co-leader stated it was “hard to believe” that the incident was not an act of terrorism, despite police assurances indicating otherwise.

Guidance Background

The guidance were created by the UK police leadership body in acknowledgment of “public concerns” and to ensure law enforcement procedures were “effective in today’s fast-paced information era”.

This move came shortly after Reform UK accused authorities of concealing the details and migrant background of individuals charged in a different incident in a UK county.

Previous Instances

In May, when a car ploughed into crowds marking Liverpool FC’s winning, local authorities revealed that the suspect was a white UK national to dispels myths of a terrorist attack by an individual of Asian origin.

Police leaders stressed that decisions on disclosing these details would remain with individual police forces, taking into account wider legal and ethical considerations. Confirming a individual’s migrant background would fall to the Home Office, not law enforcement.
