Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Prison Memoir Detailing Three Weeks Incarcerated

The ex-president of France will soon publish a personal account this autumn titled Notes from a Cell, chronicling the period endured in jail.

This news was made just 11 days following the former president left prison while he appeals the guilty verdict related to criminal conspiracy in a case to obtain election campaign funds linked to the government of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail visibility is limited, and activities are scarce,” he reflects in one passage, suggesting the account will focus on his reflections during isolation rather than wider commentary on the overcrowded and troubled French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, which is missing in La Santé, where one hears constant sound,” he adds. “The racket unfortunately never stops. Yet, similar to barren lands, one’s inner world is strengthened in prison.”

Court Appearance: Recounting the Hardship

During his plea for freedom, the former leader was present by video link from inside the facility, depicting prison life as draining. He had told the court: “I must acknowledge those working in the jail, showing great humanity, and who helped make this nightmare bearable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined that in my seventies, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a trial forced upon me. I admit it’s difficult, extremely tough. It affects one every inmate as it’s exhausting.”

Unprecedented Situation

The former president, who led the nation between 2007 and 2012, set a precedent as ex-leader in the European Union and the first leader since WWII from France to serve time in prison.

Ahead of his incarceration he had said he intended to spend the period for authoring a memoir.

Cell Library

It remains unclear whether he had time to review and analyze the volumes he had in his cell: a two-volume biography of Jesus plus the novel by Dumas The Count of Monte Cristo, a plot where a wrongfully accused individual is sentenced to jail but escapes to take revenge.

Daily Reality

The former leader remained secluded for his own security in a space approximately nine square meters including private facilities at La Santé prison located in the capital. Guards occupied the next cell.

It was stated that he consumed only yoghurts while inside worried that prison cuisine might have been spat on. He had facilities for self-catering but he turned this down, according to reports. Not known is whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.

Legal Perspective

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who visited his client every day during the incarceration, informed the court his safety would improve outside jail rather than in custody. “There were menacing messages, has heard screaming during nighttime plus rapid actions next door during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Legal Proceedings

His incarceration began last month after a Paris court imposed a five-year sentence for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to obtain election financing for his presidential bid.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, with a new trial is scheduled for the coming spring.
