Physical Health or World Standing - Boulter's Melbourne Grand Slam Predicament

Britain's Katie Boulter admits she feels she has to "decide between my physical condition and my world standing" as the scramble persists for a place in the upcoming January Australian Open primary competition.

While the regular WTA Tour season is over, there are still ranking points to be earned in Latin American countries, Argentina, Ecuador and European destinations.

The women's competitor lineup for the first Grand Slam of the upcoming season will be determined by the global standings of the December cutoff, which could present a difficult choice for athletes near the selection threshold.

Health Challenges

Ex- British leading competitor Boulter tore an hip muscle in her final event of the year in international locations last month, and is now considering whether to play in the WTA 125 Challenger event in European venues, the continental destination, in the first week of December.

Boulter's ongoing health concern, and the reality she would need to achieve at least multiple victories in the European event to enhance her position, means she may likely ultimately not competing.

Varying Approaches

In comparison, men's competitors are not facing the equivalent situation, as for the first time the men's Australian Open entry list will be drawn up from current week's rankings, which is the ATP's standard year-end ranking date.

The adjustment is designed to deterring players from seeking position points during what is fundamentally the break period.

Professional Adjustments

This year has been a demanding one for Boulter.

She achieved merely 14 elite main-draw games and recently separated with coach Biljana Veselinovic after a extended collaboration in which she won multiple WTA victories.

"Biljana is an outstanding coach, and an exceptionally excellent individual as well, which creates situations particularly challenging," Boulter commented.

The pursuit for a different trainer is well under way, seeking someone who has elite background as Boulter maintains the belief she can be a world-class competitor.

Career Objectives

"Going forward with a replacement instructor, a key aspect I'm very clear on is that they are going to be an individual who has extensive experience in how to make it to the highest echelon of this game," she said.

"I've been ranked as elevated as 23 and I believe I can climb back to that level. I am not convinced my performance has disappeared, I feel the steadiness needs to develop.

"My aim is not to be ranked 50, 40, 30, 20 - we've accomplished that. The goal is to be within the elite group."
