A couple of months following getting a 27-year sentence for trying to “eradicate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last looks destined for incarceration. Imminent Jailing The found-guilty instigator – who has been under residential detention in his residence while a set of judicial steps and challenges proceed – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the next few days, amid mounting rumors that he will be sent to a notorious top-security penitentiary. Previous Remarks on Convicts Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the conservative ex- soldier displayed little compassion for Brazil’s inmates. “What’s the need to give those dirtbags a good life?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be screwed, end of story. That's my view.” In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to wind up in prison, all you have to do is not rape, abduction or theft.” Incarceration Facility Speculation Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, a group of four this week toured the prison in an apparent effort to prevent the judiciary from sending him there. Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, said he anticipated the 70-year-old figure to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and was concerned his destination could be Papuda. Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s acute digestive ailments – the result of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 political campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He will not be able to handle it if they take him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he commented, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the standard of jail cuisine. During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells holding 40 prisoners: “That is practically one square meter per inmate. “We conversed to the convicts and they grumble, of course, of the horrible food,” added the senator. Backers Voice Concerns Lucas is not the lone figure expressing views ahead of the one-time head of state's predicted incarceration. Penning in a leading daily, another ally, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “severe” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and claimed Brazil was about to experience “the largest unfairness in its record”. “It represents an unfairness that gnaws the spirits of countless Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote. Varied Popular Response It is possibly correct considering the significant backing Bolsonaro retains on the right-wing. Yet his expected jailing has also warmed the spirits of numerous individuals who feel he should be imprisoned for planning to stop the elected leader from becoming president – and even plotting to have him killed. Congressman Otoni, a representative for the incumbent president's Workers’ party, commented: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to get respectful handling – but proper handling behind bars. He must not carry on being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.” He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have for a long time applauding the harsh handling of inmates, had suddenly woken up to their privileges. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has always asserted that civil liberties were not for criminals – opted to inspect a penitentiary to learn what situations are really like,” he stated. “The former president is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “humiliating, demeaning handling”. Possible Incarceration Conditions Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now holds about thousands of prisoners, his probable assigned facility seems to be a nearby prison for law enforcement and other “particular” detainees referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda). His potential cell are much more adequate than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the impressive official residence, around a short distance away. As per sources, the room Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha is about 24 sq metres – approximately the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 sq metre restroom with a bathing area and a 130 square foot balcony. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a television and even a cooler in his cell as long as they were donated by his relatives,” the report suggested. Partisan Reactions Senator Lucas criticized the speculated plan to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will decide his future in the {
