The Denver Nuggets star won the NBA's Most Valuable Player honor in three of the past four years.

Three-time National Basketball Association MVP Jokic endured a "gut-wrenching" knee injury when the Nuggets were defeated 147-123 to the Heat.

The Serbian center was hurt in the latter stages of the opening half in an accidental contact with fellow Nugget Jones.

Jones stepped on the footwear of the big man, and he immediately went down to the ground holding his knee.

The veteran player, that leads the league season in boards and dimes, posted a score of 21 points and eight assists in the matchup before suffering the injury.

Jokic will have an scan on Tuesday to evaluate the severity of the problem.

"Immediately, he understood something was wrong," commented Denver coach Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Anyone who gets hurt, that's tough to see, especially a player as important as he is. More information will come tomorrow."

"We'll move on together. Clearly, at this moment, I am more concerned primarily about Jokic personally and the disappointment of experiencing a situation of that nature."
